Candy Cane LegendLegend has it that in 1670 a German choirmaster bent candy sticks into a hook shape to give to children at church services. The hook was representative of the shepherd's staff associated with the Good Shepherd Jesus Christ, and in the shape of a "J" for the name of Jesus. A candy maker wanted to profess his Christian faith and chose to use several symbols in addition to the hook shaped candy stick. He used the white candy stick to symbolize the Virgin Birth of Jesus. The candy stick was hard to represent the rock solid foundation of the church. The hard, white candy stick looked so plain that the candy maker decorated with three stripes. The red stripe was for the blood shed by Jesus on the cross. Candy canes first reach North America when they were brought over by Germans-Swedish immigrant, who decorated Christams trees with them. Over time the candy became simply known as the Candy cane, but there is a deeper meaning and more important meaning for those who choose to believe.
